New publication in Third World Quarterly

MECACS member Hsinyen Lai has an article recently published online in Third World Quarterly. The article, entitled ‘The ‘Juffair dilemma’: Arab nationalism, alignment and ‘national-popular collective will’ in Bahrain, adopts Antonio Gramsci’s idea of ‘national-popular collective will’ to re-conceptualise Arab nationalism. The article provides an alternative understanding of the role of Arab nationalism after the Arab–Israeli War in 1967 in the scholarship of International Relations of the Middle East. Through the case of Bahrain in the 1970s, it argues that the influence of Arab nationalism on alignment is revealed through a political struggle within and without Bahrain, corresponding to wider anti-imperialist movements during the Cold War.
